A QC program on paper is not a QC program. What separates a shop that passes an AISC certification audit from one that generates corrective action requests is the evidence trail — documents that prove the right WPS was used, the right welder made the weld, and the CWI actually checked the work before the member shipped. Fabrication travelers and weld maps are the two documents at the center of that trail.

What a Fabrication Traveler Is

A fabrication traveler is a job-specific document that tracks a structural member from material receipt through completion. It lists every operation the member must go through and provides a sign-off block for each step. A traveler for a fabricated column, for example, would include:

  • Material receipt and MTR verification (material test report reviewed and base metal confirmed to match WPS requirements)
  • Piece mark assignment
  • Cutting and preparation
  • Fit-up inspection (dimensional, joint geometry, surface prep)
  • Welding (WPS number referenced, welder ID recorded)
  • Post-weld visual inspection (CWI signature)
  • NDE (method, technician certification reference, accept/reject)
  • Repair if required (repair WPS referenced)
  • Final inspection
  • Coating or galvanizing
  • Shipping release

The traveler moves with the member. In a shop floor environment with dozens of pieces in process simultaneously, the traveler is the field-level record that connects the physical piece to the documented QC program. Without it, there's no way for a CWI to confirm at visual inspection that the welder was qualified and the correct WPS was followed — that information lives in the traveler, not in the welder's memory.

AISC auditors look for travelers as evidence that the QC plan described in the Quality Manual is being executed, not just written. A quality manual that prescribes traveler use but no travelers in production is an immediate audit finding.

Weld Maps: The Link Between Welds and Records

A weld map is a drawing-based reference that assigns a unique identifier to each weld on a structural member or assembly. The map is typically derived from the shop drawing, with weld symbols replaced or supplemented by weld numbers or alphanumeric identifiers. Each ID on the map corresponds to a record entry that shows:

  • Weld ID
  • WPS number
  • Welder ID
  • Date welded
  • NDE requirement (if any)
  • CWI inspection status
  • Any NCR numbers if a deficiency was found

The weld map ties the physical weld to the documentation. When a CWI records a visual inspection result, the inspection entry references the weld ID from the map. When UT is performed on a CJP groove weld, the UT record references the same ID. When an AISC auditor pulls a random member from a completed project and asks to see the inspection record for weld 3-B on piece mark C-24, the weld map is how the shop produces that record in under two minutes.

What AISC Looks for in an Audit

AISC Standard for Steel Building Structures (AISC 202) requires shops to maintain a documented QC program covering WPS control, welder qualification tracking, and inspection records. The audit evaluates whether the program is real — meaning it runs in production, not just in the quality manual binder.

Common audit evidence requests:

Active project check. The auditor selects a current or recently completed project and traces a member from shop order through shipping. For each weld on a selected member, the auditor wants to see: WPS used (and confirm it's approved for the application), welder record confirming the welder was qualified under that WPS at the time of welding, CWI inspection record confirming the work was inspected and accepted.

WPS availability check. WPS documents must be available at the welding station when welding is in progress — not in a binder in the QC office. The auditor will check whether welders on the floor have access to the applicable WPS.

Welder qualification current. The AWS D1.1 welder continuity 6-month rule means that any welder who hasn't welded in the qualified process/position for more than 6 months loses qualification in that category. The auditor will cross-reference the welder IDs on the weld maps with the qualification matrix to confirm that on the date the weld was made, that welder was current. A lapse in continuity that was missed in production is a QC program failure, not just a qualification gap.

Inspection record completeness. The CWI inspection records must correspond to the welds that the project actually required to be inspected. If the QC plan says CJP groove welds get visual inspection and UT, the auditor will look for both records for those welds. Missing inspection records on welds that should have been inspected is a systematic finding — it suggests the CWI inspection program isn't being enforced.

Building a Practical Traveler System

Shops starting from scratch often over-engineer travelers by trying to capture every detail on a single form. A simpler approach works better in production:

One traveler per piece mark. The traveler is indexed to the shop piece mark, which is the same reference used on the shop drawings and by the erector. Every operation that touches that piece mark sign-offs against the traveler.

Reference WPS by number, not by copy. The traveler records which WPS number applies to each weld sequence — it does not need to include a copy of the WPS. The controlled WPS documents live in the WPS library (physical or software-based). The traveler points to them.

Welder ID in the weld record, not just the traveler header. It is insufficient to write "John Smith — welder" at the top of a traveler that covers 14 welds. Each weld or weld sequence needs its own welder ID, because on a complex member multiple welders may work different joints or shifts. The weld map cross-reference makes this specific.

CWI sign-off before the next operation. The traveler should have inspection hold points that prevent the member from moving to the next stage until the CWI has signed. If the traveler has a fit-up sign-off block, the piece should not go to welding until that block is signed. This is how travelers enforce the QC plan in production rather than just recording what happened after the fact.

Electronic vs. Paper Travelers

Both work if maintained correctly. Paper travelers in a shop environment face practical hazards — they get wet, oil-stained, torn, or misplaced. When a paper traveler goes missing mid-production, reconstructing the record from memory is unreliable and an audit risk.

Electronic travelers — spreadsheets on a shared drive, ERP entries, or dedicated fabrication software — eliminate the physical loss problem but introduce access and version control requirements. The QC plan should define:

  • How travelers are created (from what source drawing revision)
  • Who has authority to add entries
  • How corrections are made (auditable edits, not deletions)
  • Where completed travelers are archived and for how long
