Walk through most structural fab shops and you will find the same pattern: certified welders run the production passes, but fitters and helpers make the tack welds that hold the assembly together during fit-up. The assumption is that tack welding does not count — it is just fitting. Under AWS D1.1, that assumption is wrong, and it is one of the most common qualification findings during AISC certification audits and third-party QC reviews.

The Critical Distinction: Incorporated vs. Temporary Tack Welds
AWS D1.1 draws a clear line between two types of tack welds, and which side a tack falls on determines the qualification requirement.
Incorporated tack welds are tack welds that remain in place and become part of the final weld. When a production welder runs the root pass or fill passes over an incorporated tack, that tack becomes fused into the structural weld. It is no longer a temporary attachment — it is a permanent part of the joint.
Temporary tack welds are used only to hold components in position during fit-up, then completely removed by grinding, gouging, or mechanical means before the production weld is made. The final weld does not incorporate them at all.
The distinction matters because AWS D1.1 requires that incorporated tack welds be made by qualified welders in accordance with the applicable WPS. Temporary tack welds that are fully removed have less stringent requirements — they are treated more like fit-up hardware than structural welds. In practice, the vast majority of structural assembly tack welds are incorporated tack welds, left in place and welded over. This means the vast majority of fitters making those tacks need to be qualified.
What AWS D1.1 Requires for Incorporated Tack Welders
The AWS D1.1:2025 qualification chapter is explicit: personnel making welds that are incorporated into the work — including tack welds — must be qualified in accordance with the standard's welder performance qualification requirements. There is no exception for tack welds made by fitters, helpers, or other trades who are not designated "production welders" by shop convention.
This requirement also extends to the WPS: incorporated tack welds must be made in conformance with an applicable WPS, using the same or equivalent preheat and process parameters as the production weld. A fitter who runs a cold tack on a preheat-required joint — because "it is just a tack" — has created a non-conforming condition even if the tack itself looks sound. Inadequate preheat on an incorporated tack creates the same hydrogen cracking risk as inadequate preheat on the root pass.

WPQ Test Requirements for Tack Welders
There is no special "tack welder" test in AWS D1.1. The WPQ test that qualifies a welder for production groove welds or fillet welds in a given process and position also qualifies them to make incorporated tack welds in that process and position. The qualification range is the same.
This means a welder who has passed a flat-position fillet weld test (position 1F) using FCAW-G is qualified to make incorporated tack welds in the flat position using FCAW-G — and nothing more. If the assembly requires tacks in the vertical position, the welder needs a vertical-position qualification as well.
The practical consequence for most fab shops: the fitters who make structural tack welds need to be on the same WPQ roster as production welders, with current qualifications for the positions and processes they use. Many shops accomplish this by requiring all shop personnel who hold welding equipment to complete the standard WPQ test battery. Common Fab Shop Mistakes That Fail Audits
Fitters are not on the WPQ roster. The most frequent finding: the shop has a complete WPQ file for every designated production welder, but the four fitters who make all the assembly tack welds have never tested and are not in the system. The auditor asks who made the tack welds on a joint, gets the answer "the fitter," checks the WPQ roster, and writes a nonconformance.
Assuming a WPQ from another process covers tack welding. A welder certified to weld SMAW is not automatically certified to make FCAW-G tack welds, even if the shop considers the tack "just a tack." Process is an essential variable. If the incorporated tack is made by FCAW-G, the welder needs a FCAW-G WPQ.
Ignoring the preheat requirement for tack welds. When the WPS requires preheat — as it does for most A514, A572 Grade 65, or thick A572 Grade 50 joints — the preheat applies to the tack weld too. Skipping preheat because the tack "will get burned off" ignores the fact that the incorporated tack will not get burned off; it will get fused into the structural weld.
Continuity lapse on a fitter. A fitter who tested and qualified two years ago but has only been fitting (no welding) for the past seven months has lapsed under the six-month continuity rule in AWS D1.1:2025 Clause 6.4.1. Documentation and Tracking Requirements
The documentation requirements for tack welders are the same as for production welders: a WPQ test record on file, a continuity log, and — when tack welders are captured in the weld traveler — a record of which welder made the tack on which joint.
Whether the traveler must identify the tack welder by name depends on the project specification. AWS D1.1 itself does not require tack welder IDs on the weld traveler, but many owner and AISC specifications add this requirement. When it is required, the tack welder ID and WPQ number go in the same cell as the production welder information.
The nonconformance risk justifies keeping the documentation simple and complete: if a fitter making tack welds is on the WPQ roster with a current test and a logged continuity record, the documentation trail is complete. The finding never materializes.
Practical Implementation: A Simple Compliance System
The easiest path to compliance is to stop treating "fitter" and "welder" as mutually exclusive job titles for qualification purposes. Require every person on the shop floor who may make a tack weld that could be incorporated — fitters, helpers, erectors — to hold a current WPQ for the processes and positions they use.
The incremental cost is low. A WPQ groove weld test requires a few hours and a test coupon. The qualification it provides covers the full production weld range as well as tack welds. The alternative — discovering unqualified tack welders during an AISC audit or owner verification inspection — triggers a nonconformance disposition that can require NDE of every affected joint, potentially grinding out and re-welding incorporated tacks, and a corrective action report that follows the shop's record for years.
Build the WPQ roster to include everyone who holds a stinger or a MIG gun in your shop. Track continuity for all of them. Keep it current before every project begins.
